NEGREDO: “IT WASN’T OUR DAY”

The Cádiz striker was unable to find the net on his return to the Sánchez-Pizjuán

Speaking after his return to the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán ended in defeat, former Sevilla striker Álvaro Negredo bemoaned Cádiz’s sloppy first-half display against their fellow Andalusians. “It was pretty even in the opening period of the game, but the [first Sevilla] goal made it much more difficult,” Negredo said. The hosts’ second then left Álvaro Cervera’s men with a mountain to climb, he added: “The problem is that the two goals came very close together. They capitalised on mistakes we made.”

“We tried to stay cool, but we struggled to create chances,” Negredo continued, concluding: “It wasn’t our day.” However, he urged his side not to dwell on the defeat: “We have to keep on working, because we knew this wasn’t going to be easy at all; we just have to focus on the next game now, try to move on as quickly as possible and keep on working hard.” Because Cádiz will face other teams like today’s and will need to step it up when they do: “Sevilla have a lot of quality and are very good at managing the tempo of games.”
