CERVERA: “WE WERE COPING UNTIL THE FIRST GOAL”

The Cádiz coach rued his side’s mistakes, which likely changed the course of the game

Álvaro Cérvera gave an in-depth analysis of the defeat that opened Cádiz’s second half to the league season: “We’d aimed for a game in which we kept the draw going for as long as possible, to then go in search of our chances. Sevilla weren’t creating danger, they were uncomfortable, but a stroke of bad luck to make it 1-0 made it an uphill battle for us. We struggle a lot to create when we’ve got the ball, and they got their second because of it. In the second half we tried to push forward, but we conceded a third goal of the kind that you just can’t give away in Primera División”

The coach’s analysis: “We need to work out what happened, because if we played this match again, things would be different. There will be games in which we can go toe-to-toe with teams like Sevilla, because we were coping until the first goal. From that point on, we saw our weaknesses; it’s not that they are playing at a completely different level, but there are games like today where it just doesn’t happen.”

The team’s belief: “The team was doing what we wanted, although we thought we’d do more with the ball when we won it back, but we gave it back to them. After the first goal they were ok, they didn’t shut down, this defeat was for footballing not mental reasons.”

Self-criticism: “We went out to do something more with the ball, we continued defending well with everyone helping, but when we got the ball back we struggle to get into the opposition half. That’s where, against teams like these, they can hurt you like what happened with the first goal.”

Cervera’s plan for the demanding schedule ahead: “We know we’re coming up against teams who are better than us, but we’re getting ready to be better than today.”
