CERVERA: “WE SAW A LOT OF GOOD THINGS TONIGHT”

The Cádiz CF boss was pleased with his team’s Carranza Trophy victory

Cádiz CF head coach Álvaro Cervera spoke to the media after his side’s Carranza Trophy win over Atlético Madrid on Wednesday. “There are factors like the fans, the opposition and the occasion that make you play better,” he said. “I hope we don’t get carried away by this result, because this isn’t the same as LaLiga. We played well, we’re very happy with our display and there are plenty of positive conclusions to be drawn, but we need to see these good things week in, week out – not just when there are factors that spur us on. We saw a lot of good things tonight, and also things that we need to improve on.”

An evening of positives: “I wouldn’t say there are negatives to be drawn, but it’s true that these games are nothing like LaLiga. The moments of danger really are moments of danger in LaLiga; that’s not so much the case here. We had more of the ball than we usually do. It’s all very positive. I didn’t see any negatives, except for the two players with quadriceps injuries. That’s the negative. But I was quite pleased with pretty much everything I saw.”

Errors to correct: “You’re always going to make mistakes in football, and lately we’ve been making mistakes in areas where we can’t afford to. We repeated the odd error, but I’m sure that won’t happen in LaLiga. I’m confident we’ll iron out those errors.”

Words for Cádiz’s young guns: “I know there are players emerging from the youth set-up who have very bright futures ahead of them if they look after themselves and take the right steps. You see players and the people they’ve got around them, and you know they could make it. [Álvaro] Bastida is a good footballer, he’s very young, and he listens to everything the players tell him. [Iván] Chapela dug out crosses without being extremely quick. You have to be careful with the lads in the ‘B’ team; it’s a big step-up from their league to Primera.”

Delighted to see fans back in the stands: “It’s fantastic to see and to hear our supporters again. They are a huge boost to the team.”
