Speaking to reporters from the Carranza press room, Cádiz CF head coach Álvaro Cervera offered his thoughts on the Real Betis match. “We know we’re short on quality with ball at feet and we know that our best route to success is today’s, but you can also lose because of a set piece as we did this afternoon,” he said. “The other team weren’t better than us, and that’s something we can achieve by playing the way we did today.”

Annoyance at conceding a late goal: “It’s very frustrating, because it’s not as if they were putting us under tremendous pressure and were creating lots of chances. Their goal came about from an isolated opportunity.”

Game plan: “I still believe playing like we did today is our best route to success, but what kind of game we end up seeing can change depending on the team opposite us. Not every team we play will have guys like [Andrés] Guardado, [Sergio] Canales and Joaquín. We have to carry on in this vein, because when we try to play more on the front foot, experience has shown us that we’re out of contention early doors; we lost the game today, but only right at the end.”

Happy with the team despite the defeat? “I’m obviously not happy, because we’ve lost – but I don’t feel as down as I did after the game against Athletic Club. We competed, we played the kind of game we had set out to and we lost it because of a momentary lapse. We know it’s very difficult to win points in the top flight, but if we want to stay in this division, we can’t afford to concede goals like that. It wasn’t one of those goals where you can do nothing about it.”
