CERVERA: “I WAS PLEASED WITH THE WAY THE LADS REACTED”

The Cádiz CF boss reflected on the game and the two penalty decisions – the handball that was given, and the one that wasn’t

Speaking to the media via video link, Cádiz CF head coach Álvaro Cervera offered his thoughts on Sunday’s defeat to Villarreal CF at the Estadio de la Cerámica.

We played better today than in other away games and were at our best after we went two down, but at the end of the day we’ve let them score twice,” Cervera said. “It’s not about what you deserve or don’t deserve; football’s a game where the team that scores the most goals wins.”

Asked about the penalty decisions, he said of the early spot-kick awarded to Villarreal: “I’m pretty sure it’s a shot that’s going off target. If it had been on target, fair enough… but from behind you can see it’s going over. Yet the rules say you have to give it.” A possible Cádiz penalty for a late Yeremi Pino handball “wasn’t checked or given”, Cervera said, but he noted: “The referee was excellent.”

Praising his team for “standing up to be counted at a very tough ground to come to”, he added: “We’ve now seen a number of penalties [given against us] in consecutive games. That can’t be happening and I’m not happy with it.”

What Cervera least liked about Cádiz’s display was “the first goal. We give the ball away and that leads to the penalty. As for what was good about today’s performance: I was pleased with the way the lads reacted. We could easily have earned ourselves a point.”
