Right from the off, it was clear the Carranza was going to witness an intensely fought game, between two sides who are characterised by their battling nature and their commitment to defensive solidity. Cádiz CF had opportunities in the first period, particularly on a counter attack shortly after the half-hour mark that Álvaro Negredo couldn’t quite finish off. Álvaro Cervera’s men were well organised at the back and looked very dangerous on the break.
However, it was Atlético Madrid who got the opening goal, on a forward foray a few minutes before half time. Yannick Carrasco picked up the ball inside the area after a series of ricochets, before evading the attentions of the Cádiz defence and beating David Gil with a low effort. Before the break arrived, Cádiz created the odd threatening attack, but it remained 1-0 to the visitors when the whistle blew.
After half time, Cádiz went in search of an equaliser, playing at a fast pace and pressing Atlético high up the pitch in a bid to prevent Diego Simeone’s side from getting out of their own half. With crosses that were cleared by the Atleti defence and shots by Alberto Perea that were stopped by goalkeeper Jan Oblak, Cádiz repeatedly got the home fans out of their seats as they spent the second 45 battling for a leveller.
During the closing stages of the game, the hosts offered no let-up – and Perea produced a low, powerful shot from the edge of the area that flew into the net and brought parity, ultimately forcing the encounter to be decided by penalties. It was Cádiz who were the more clinical of the two sides from the spot, and they lifted the ‘Trophy of Trophies’.
