CÁDIZ PLAYERS HAPPY WITH HUESCA WIN

Álvaro Negredo, Pombo and Cifuentes spoke on the pitch at El Alcoraz at the end of the match against Huesca

The players designated to speak to the press after Cádiz’s 2-0 win over Huesca in El Alcoraz were Álvaro Negredo, Jorge Pombo and Alberto Cifuentes, who all expressed their satisfaction with the team’s victory.

Álvaro Negredo opened his account for the season with another important goal to give Cádiz an early lead. “I’m happy to have scored but even happier for the win,” the forward said. “This was a difficult victory because we were playing a team in our area of the league and because we were coming off the back of a defeat.”

The vastly experienced Negredo added: “Beating a direct rival away from home is always a good thing and it’s one that will be remembered at the end of the day.”

On his goal, the striker said: “I was in the right place at the right time. Álex put the ball in, the keeper made a mistake and I was there. It was Pombo’s goal that gave us that sense of security towards the end."

Alberto Cifuentes, who set a Liga record as the oldest player to debut in the top flight, told the pitch-side reporters: “It’s been a dream debut in Primera División, although the most important thing is to get the win. We are very happy because we managed to keep a clean sheet and get the three points."

The keeper highlighted the importance of beating Huesca away from home and said the Cádiz DNA played its part. “Huesca did their homework but we were able to impose our style on the game. It’s very difficult to win here and it’s going to be a tough season so picking up a victory today was very important.”

Speaking about his record-breaking Primera debut, Cifuentes said: “I did it at the age of 41 and I’m really happy. There is nowhere I would rather have made a bit of history than with this Cádiz team as some of us have come all the way up from Segunda B. You have to believe in the project and never stop dreaming.”

Jorge Pombo also highlighted the importance of the win for the club. “The sense of happiness is huge. We fought, ran and suffered for this victory. The work we put in and the victory is for everybody, that’s the most important thing. We stuck together and we scored two goals from two chances. We didn’t make any mistakes either so we were able to carve out the win.”
