Augusto Fernández, wearing the Cádiz CF shirt, played out his final minutes as a professional footballer against Levante at the Ciudad de Valencia. The veteran midfielder hung up his boots as the season drew to a close, a decision he had explained during a press conference earlier in the week.
It’s worth remembering that Augusto arrived on a free transfer in the final stretch of last season’s campaign and witnessed first-hand the great achievement that was the club’s promotion to the Primera División. Once in the top flight he has since made 12 appearances and that came to an end with a fitting touch, as he stepped onto the Valencian pitch wearing the captain's armband. In addition to this, the other players wore tops with a special message to the Argentinian: ‘Thank you Augusto’.
Fernández, an Argentinian international midfielder, started his career at River Plate (2005-10) and had a brief spell, for half of the 2009-10 season, in France with Saint Etienne before returning to Argentina to play two campaigns for Vélez Sarsfield that took him up until 2012.
He returned to Europe and to Spain that year, wearing the colours of Celta Vigo in the top flight for three and a half seasons, and then moved to Atlético Madrid in 2016 where he remained until 2018 and was very close to leaving them as a champion of Europe. Before he joined Cádiz, he tried his luck in China, representing Beijing Renhe.
Augusto, as well as being remembered for his part in the Primera División promotion, won two league titles in Argentina and was a runner-up in the World Cup with Argentina’s national team, picking up a total of 16 caps along the way.
