ÁLVARO GIMÉNEZ RETURNS TO ELCHE AND SCORES

The striker opened his goalscoring account with a header against his former team

It often happens when a player faces their former team, especially when they’re a striker. And it’s exactly what happened today to Cádiz striker Álvaro Giménez, who used to play for Elche, and who opened his goalscoring account for the season with the equaliser in today’s match.

Giménez was “delighted for scoring again after so much time and helping the team with the leveller.” What’s more, he scored a second, but it was ruled out “because [the ref] blew for handball, although I think the ball hit my hand. It all happened pretty quickly and I have my doubts.”

The striker gave his thoughts on the game, saying “the first half was pretty even until an Elche player got sent off. We moved the ball from side to side trying to get on top of them, but when they pack the defence it’s tough. It’s always good to pick up a  point, we should be happy.”

His goal came from a cross from the left from Perea: “A man down, they shut up shop at the back and the only way through was to go on the outside and see if there would be a bit of luck when it was sent into the box.”

Despite not managing a victory, Giménez was clearly satisfied with the draw, “because we needed to get back to picking up points and it was even more important against Elche, who are our direct rivals. We’re leaving with our heads held high and we’ll continue doing things our way.”
