Cádiz Club de Fútbol midfielder Álex Fernández looked back over the season, discussing the stand-out moments of 2020/21
Overall assessment
Álex was fulsome in his praise of Cádiz’s campaign, declaring: “It was a great season. The team certainly lived up to expectations and then some. We showed that we’re a great club, that we’re growing and that we’re doing things the right way.”
Season highs and lows
“The high points of the season were the wins over the two big boys,” he said. “At the start of the season, you’re not expecting to pick up those points and they were a real boost to us.” He continued: “The worst point of the season was maybe that bad run that we had; you obviously keep believing, but they were difficult times. We stuck together as a family, as a group of guys who are all good mates, and we got through it.”
Assessment of his campaign
“Until I got injured it went really well for me,” Álex said. “I was getting a lot of game time and getting back amongst the goals. Returning to the top flight with Cádiz has been really special.” He added: “The knee injury was a bit of a blow, but I’m raring to get back out there and show how important I can be to this club.”
Ambitions for next season
Cádiz have to “carry on with the same goal of survival, of staying in the top flight,” he said. “That’s the goal the club needs to have, and the way the team has been managed has been great.” A player brimming with optimism and positive energy, he went on: “The message is clear, as is the game plan. We have to stick together – that’s been the key to this team’s success.”
A 2020/21 moment to particularly cherish
“The wins against Real Madrid and Barcelona, because we showed what a good group of players we are,” Álex explained. “This team has shown an ability to pick itself up in the face of a lot of criticism. We’ve kept the spine of our second-tier team intact and have shown we can compete in the top flight.”
One word to define Cádiz’s season
“Majestic,” he declared, adding: “Sealing survival with four games to spare shows what a great job we did. The season was a complete success.”
