Speaking post-match at the Estadio de la Cerámica, Iván Alejo offered his thoughts on Cádiz CF’s 2-1 defeat to Villarreal CF, declaring: “In terms of the football we played, this was one of our best performances of the season – but the early penalty [scored by Villarreal] meant it was an uphill battle.” He added: “I’m really proud of the lads and if we can keep on playing like this, we’ll be in with a really good shout of staying up.”

Alejo went on: “When it comes to handball decisions, the criteria that they’re based on aren’t always clear to us. All your hard work can be for nought because of a single decision, but you just have to accept the call the officials make.”

The winger concluded: “Given the players that they have, it’s no mean feat for us to have pinned Villarreal back inside their own half, but at the end of the day it counts for nothing, because you don’t get the three points just for playing well. We just have to focus on the Valencia game now.”
