Cádiz CF goalkeeper Alberto Cifuentes set a new record in Spanish football history by becoming the oldest player to make his debut in the top flight.
The Albacete-born stopper played his first game in the Primera division on the second match-day of the season at Huesca's El Alcoraz stadium at the age of 41 years, 3 months and 19 days. So far the goalkeeper is also the oldest player to feature in LaLiga this season.
Other top flight veterans.
The oldest player to play in the Spanish first division was Real Sociedad's Harry Lowe who played for the Basque side in the 1930s at the age of 48 years and 226 days. His record still stands today but there is an interesting story behind Lowe's record. The Englishman was the coach of the San Sebastian outfit and his side travelled to Valencia with just eleven players. One of the team fell sick and with no substitutes available, Lowe pulled on the boots and played in the match.
In the modern day era of Spanish football, the oldest player to feature in LaLiga is another goalkeeper, with Ricardo playing for Osasuna at the age of 41 years and 141 days. Should Alberto Cifuentes feature again for the first team in the current campaign, he stands a fine chance of overcoming Ricardo's milestone.
Following today's game in Huesca, Cifuentes eclipses legendary Italian defender Carboni who played in LaLiga with Valencia at the age of 41 years and 40 days.
Cifuentes, a key figure in the club's recent history.
Alberto Cifuentes has been an instrumental figure in Cadiz's recent history with the goalkeeper heavily featuring between the sticks for the club in his five seasons with the team.
He arrived at the club in Segunda B and is now playing for Cádiz at the highest level of Spanish football. The player has enjoyed two promotions with the club and has been hugely important in steering the team back to the top flight.
