Saturday’s match began with Atlético Sanluqueño determined to pin Cádiz back in their own half and prevent Los Amarillos from breaking. Although the hosts found themselves up against a well-organised visiting side, their attacking endeavour earned them a chance to open the scoring from the spot after 11 minutes. However, Cádiz goalkeeper David Gil guessed right to keep out Dani Güiza’s penalty and the game remained scoreless.
In the 24th minute, it was Güiza who then finished off a Sanluqueño attack with a shot from the edge of the area that was directed right into the corner of the Cádiz net. Following the goal, the home side began to drop deeper as Álvaro Cervera’s men took control of the ball, but Cádiz struggled to carve out space in dangerous areas.
As is typical of pre-season matches, both teams made a host of substitutions in the second half. With Sanluqueñocontinuing to sit deep, Cádiz enjoyed greater opportunities to threaten the hosts’ penalty area. A clear-cut chance fell to Choco Lozano when he was left one on one with Marco Vallein the 68th minute, but the keeper denied the Honduran.
It was one-way traffic in the second 45, as a well-drilled Atlético Sanluqueño defended stoutly while Cádiz tried every way they could to find chinks in the Sanluqueño backline and hurt the home side. Although Cervera’s team gave it everything they had, there was to be no change to the scoreline, as Pedro Buenaventura’s side came away with a narrow victory.
