Real Madrid left the Ramón de Carranza stadium with all three points in a game that was shaped by a VAR decision that saw Zidane's side awarded a penalty kick just before the 30 minute mark of the game. After Benzema's conversion from the spot, the visitors added to their lead with two further goals in quick succession and were able to see out the match. The home side never threw in the towel but saw the task of getting anything from the game becoming tricker as the clock ticked down.
Strong opening start by Cádiz
The men in yellow began the contest strongly and battled for every ball in the opening phase of the action. As was anticipated, Real Madrid took the initiative but Cádiz managed to make some inroads in the opening fifteen minutes and managed two shots on the Real Madrid goal as Jairo saw his effort saved by Courtois with Jonsson then driving the ball over the Madrid crossbar.
Madrid dominated possession but without creating any danger
Zidane's side knew that their evening at the Carranza would be no stroll in the park as they looked for a way to make inroads as they looked to the wingers on the flanks and played the ball through the middle to find a way through the yellow wall. Vinicius, Marcelo and Mariano combined well but the danger was averted with a corner kick the outcome for the visitors.
A VAR decision gave Madrid a foothold in the game
A one-off incident was to change the complexion of the match as a through ball into the area saw Mariano break into the Cádiz box with the striker clipped by Iza with referee Mateu called upon by the video referee to review the incident. The Valencia based match official awarded a yellow card to Iza as Benzema stepped up to drill the ball home from the spot.
Benzema pops up again
Cádiz were reeling from the goal and shortly after managed to ship not one, but two further goals in the next ten minutes of the contest. Odriozola scored Real Madrid's second nodding home after an assist from Benzema with the French striker bagging his second of the night finding the target heading past Ledesma in the Cádiz goal.
Sequence of substitutions in the second half
Cádiz head coach Álvaro Cervera, made four substitutions at the interval with Lozano, Cala, Saponjic and Akapo coming on in a hope of freshening things up and endeavour to secure a foothold back in the game.
Madrid giving nothing away
The side from the capital barely put a foot wrong in the second half and deprived the home side of carving out any clear-cut chances. Cádiz never surrendered and fought for every ball as the clock ticked down with no further goals being scored on the night.
