0-1 | A SOLID VICTORY

Cádiz take another step towards maintaining their top flight status with a second successive win

Cádiz CF were keen to take a major step forward this Saturday. Álvaro Cervera's side managed not to concede for the first time in three months and for the first time all season secured back-to-back wins with the men in yellow now on 35 points after the win over Getafe at the Coliseum. Today's game was hard fought with a dogged display ensuring a sweet-tasting victory.

Álvaro Cervera only made one change in his starting eleven with Rubén Sobrino back in the side with Jairo Izquierdo making way. The home side started with an attacking duo of Mata-Take with Aleñá and Cucurella on the flanks for Getafe.

Both sides enjoyed passages of domination in the early stages of the game with shots from Rubén Sobrino and Álvaro Negredo failing to cause any major danger. Getafe did threaten from dead-balls with Ledesma called into action to clear the ball from a corner kick with Negredo managing to clear from the danger zone as Mata was poised to pounce. Second later, Perea had a chance to make it 0-1 on the counter but ran out of ideas as he broke deep into the Getafe half.

Slowly but surely, Cádiz started to grab a foothold in the game and looked comfortable as the half wore on. Negredo had a decent chance to open the scoring but his effort struck Sobrino and at the other end, Arambarri tried his luck from long range but had to watch as his effort whistled by the Cádiz post.

It was the home side who finished the half the stronger side and a slip-up from Espino in the 39th minute almost let Getafe in but Fali was alert and deprived Aleñá from breaking through on the Cádiz goal.

The second half started with Fali going close as he watched his header go over the Getafe bar and from then on in it was the home side who were in the ascendancy as the visitors sat deep. Bordalás' side pressed and Cádiz struggled to retain any form of sustained possession. Olivera went close as the visitors defended resolutely and Espino was on hand to save an effort from Ángel that almost opened the scoring. With half an hour remaining Djene almost found the target but watched on as his header grazed the post.

Cervera's double substitute was pivotal in changing the dynamic of the contest as Jairo was replaced by Perea with Alejo coming on for Negredo. This added speed in attack complimented the work of Sobrino and Salvi with the only goal of the match coming in the 63rd minute. Espino crossed and the the ball with Rubén Sobrino almost latching on to the assist, but his mere presence alone confused Timor who steered the ball into his own net to put the visitors 0-1 ahead.

With Cádiz in the lead, the focus fell on the defence as Getafe pressed. Ledesma managed to save a Mata effort with his foot and Arambarri tried to take advantage after linking up with Mata, but could only watch his shot go wide with the Cádiz stopper being called upon to save yet another shot on target from the side in blue.

Despite Cádiz suffering as they faced constant pressure, a well trodden path that Cervera's side know well, they still looked to strike on the break and seal the victory. Alejo almost bagged a second in added time but his right footed effort just sailed over the Getafe crossbar. As the whistle sounded, the Cádiz players celebrated a hard-fought win in the very setting where the club suffered relegation to the second division at the end of the 2005/06 season.
