(2-0) TWO SUPERB GOALS FOR A SEASON-OPENING TRUMPH

Cádiz’s reserve team beat the Canary Islands side with strikes from Nieto and Baró to get their campaign off to winning start.

Cádiz B won the battle of the reserve sides against UD Las Palmas Atlético in a hard fought match, settled by two fine goals from Cádiz. Nieto scored in the first half with a header, while Baró scored in the second half from a direct free-kick.

Cádiz dominated the game at the start, but in truth failed to capitalise on their control, with almost no chances arising as the minutes went by. Little by little Las Palmas began to shake off the Cádiz pressure and started threatening Flere’s area.

In fact it was the visitors who had the first two chances of the image. For the first Iñaki produced a low shot which Flere dealt with, and just after Joel had an effort from the left that the Argentinean keeper turned away for a corner.

The response from Cádiz was sharp and decisive. Chapela hit a solid right-foot shot from just out on the left that the visiting keeper saved easily and just after Nieto scored. Mamady put in a deep cross from the left for the Cádiz number 9 to fire an unstoppable header past Sergi.

The game reached the half-way point without any more major moments of action, and after the restart the Canary Islanders went on the attack again, looking to close in on Flere’s goal. There were constant changes from each side, with the new rules  allowing five substitutions per team.

Los amarillos doubled their advantage with a dazzling free-kick from Marc Baró. The left-back put the ball in the top corner to the delight of the home side who were playing their best football of the match (75’).

The visitors kept fighting though and Cardona could have cut the deficit with a right-foot effort that hit the crossbar, but in the end the final whistle went with the scoreboard as it stood.
